disseration draft hand-in

tidy up argument!
pull the paragraphs together-create more of a flow
include the idea of the 'loss of sophistication' from conclusion earlier

procrastination is a b****

and some more

random gallery in brighton, took the picture from the shutter, but really like the use of small dots/pixels or whatever they are to make up an image. similar to screen printing. but the shape of these pixels seem like numbers?

random inspiration

just came across an interesting online portfolio and it had an interesting take on packaging tea. the idea of using speech marks is very clever as tea is associated with "chatting & conversation"

6 month duration photography

stunning photography by Justin Quinnell. the shots are the result of a 6 month long exposure taken with pinhole coke can cameras attached to telephone poles around Bristol. the streaking is the sun's movement from winter to summer. via iso50.

back to basics

the recent fairy liquid ads are proof that we always go back to the old classics or the basics and it just pushes me to think that even with all the high-techno gadgets we have today, tweaking an old classic always works. it reminds me that although computers help speed up the process they are no means for creating the idea. and this ad shows both how with the help of the computer we can retrieve a pre-existing add and alter it slightly to use today (very quickly!)

milkyway have done the same and used an ad from 1989 and just altered a little. these are really interesting because they tweak very little and they usually remove more than add.

how-to: design something without a computer

interesting video:

reminder:

-do in-depth research into marcel duchamp and kurt schwitters for my dissertation.
-get books from library!
-cut out research on art nouveau and the bauhaus movement
-base 3 case studies on david carson, marcel duchamp and kurt schwitters
-show how their work links up and supports each other and how one leads to another

i love collage

collage is one of those techniques that have gone on for generations and it may not have been appreciated initially because it created a new texture and created a sense of a loss of sophistication, which maybe some were not used to. it is one of the techniques best done by hand, as that is the way the piece gains its sense of character. and for my dissertation i will need and want to look at collage based artists, to support my theory of design before computers.

greg gossel

his work is about life, the struggle and the beauty. he tries to show this through many methods such as words, images and gestures. he is interested in process and building up a surface and layering a variety of mediums; spraying, printing, splashing, erasing, dripping and writing in a very loose way. when a piece is finished, he wants it to show a visual history of change, process and expression.

mark khaisman

what you see are stripes of packing tape, layered and wrinkled over clear plexiglas panels, mounted on simply constructed light boxes. for years he had been painting on the light easel, seeing painting as a process of shading light. he then invented this tape technique as a effective way of patching light and found that it triggers intuition better. this is known to be poor man's stain glass, but the tape makes it more alive.

david callow

he combines traditional illustration with colourful cutouts to make eye-catching pieces.

oh dissertation...

i decided to base my major research paper on 'graphic design before computers'. i am personally a more hands on person and i believe that the computer restricts our processes and also causes a stunt in our creativity and my research will look into various aspects of design before computers.
